Fast math that only works at 8 a.m. with coffee is not exam math. You need operations that survive fatigue. Pair this with Numerical without a calculator and basic operations.

Independent advice. Confirm device rules in the current CSC guide.

Magnitude first

Before precise arithmetic, ask: hundreds or thousands? More or less than the starting amount? That check catches 36 vs 360. Circle zeros in the stem.

Factor instead of grinding

Simplify fractions before multiplying. Cancel a 5 against a 10 sitting in the other number. If you reach a messy decimal, you probably skipped a cancel. Story problems in word problems often yield after one cancel.

Percent ladder

Memorize 1%, 5%, 10%, 25%, 50% as moves, not as a poster. 17% of 200: 10%=20, 5%=10, 1%=2, 2%=4, total 34. Write the ladder. Tired brains drop a step if it stays mental.

Divisibility as a filter

Options that cannot be integers when the story needs whole people are gone. If 4 people share equally, odd leftovers are suspects. This is elimination, not a personality.

Sequences vs computation

Do not use heavy mental math on a sequence that wants a pattern. Differences first. If it is a computation item, do not look for a “clever sequence.” Wrong sport. See number sequence.

Fatigue protocol

At minute 40 of a mock, switch to written columns even for “easy” percent. Pride is how zeros slip. The column is the hack.

Drill

10 percent items, 8 minutes, paper only. Then 5 word problems. Tag misses. If they are arithmetic, keep this article’s ladder. If they are stems, read word problems.

Worked example: 25% then 10% off vs 35% off

If a problem applies 25% then 10% sequentially on ₱800: 25% is 200, 600 left, 10% of 600 is 60, pay 540. A 35% single off of 800 is 280 off, pay 520. If you add 25+10 first, you invent a discount the story did not write. Read whether discounts stack on the original or on the remainder. Write “on what base?” before computing. That sentence is mental math hygiene.

When tired, do this on paper even if you could do it in your head at breakfast. Exam math is tired math.

When mental math should become paper math

If you hesitate, write it. Ego wants to stay mental. The paper wants the right bubble. At minute 35, columns are not shame. They are how 36 stays 36.

Do I need Vedic tricks? No. Percent ladder + canceling + magnitude will carry more items than a trick you half-remember.

What about fractions of fractions? Find a common whole. Draw the recipe. If the story is a mess, flag. A clever fraction that costs four minutes is a bad trade.

Keep word problems and no-calculator habits in the same week.

Fatigue drill: do percents after a workday, not after coffee

Your breakfast brain is a liar. Once a week, run the percent ladder at 8 p.m. If 15% of 240 becomes 360, you needed paper, not more videos. That evening is the exam. Train it.

Keep a tiny card: 10%, 5%, 1%. If the card needs 40 formulas, you will not glance it. See basic operations.

Do this tonight (ladder)

Ten percent items after work, paper mandatory. If you skip the paper because it feels babyish, you are training breakfast brain. Tag each miss arithmetic vs stem. Arithmetic misses repeat this ladder. Stem misses go to word problems.

A percent ladder you can run on a jeepney seat

You do not need a desk to keep the ladder alive. On a commute, pick a fare or a grocery total you already know and run 10%, 5%, 1% in your head, then check with a screenshot of the receipt later — not while driving. The point is not to look clever on public transport. The point is to make 10% of 240 feel like a reflex so exam-day 12% of 250 is only “10 plus a bit,” not a blank panic.

If the vehicle is packed and you cannot think, skip the drill. Mental math that you force through motion sickness does not transfer. Wait for a stop, a lunch table, or the last ten minutes before you clock in. The ladder is a tool. It is not a personality you perform for strangers.

Write three “anchor percents” on a small card you actually carry: 10% of 80, 15% of 200, 25% of 360. If you cannot produce those cold after a workday, you do not need a new YouTube series. You need those three until they are boring. Boring percents are how you survive item 40 when the story problem is long and the options are close.

Pair the card with basic operations. Leave Vedic branding off the card. If a trick has a name you cannot explain in one sentence, it will not be there when your pulse is up.

Honest limits

Speed without accuracy is a hobby. We would rather you be slightly slower and right. The paper does not grade swagger.
