The CSE-PPT is a long mixed paper. Time trouble is rarely “I am bad at math.” It is usually “I married one item.” Time management is a rehearsal skill. You install it in timed sets, not by reading a quote about discipline.

Know the shape, not a fake per-subtest clock
CSC publishes test-proper lengths and totals; it does not hand you a public official split of minutes per subtest to memorize as law. Do not treat our editorial templates as CSC gospel. What you *can* do is notice, in your own mocks, which cluster eats the clock — often Verbal stems or a stubborn Numerical story.
Write that cluster on your skip list.
The three-pass model
Pass 1 (most of the paper): Answer what you can without a fight. If you are still rereading the stem at ~45–60 seconds, flag and go.
Pass 2: Only flags. Now you may spend longer, but still cap a single item. Standing up in your chair (in a mock, in a real room you follow proctor rules) is less useful than moving.
Pass 3 (last minutes): Blank bubbles are wasted. Fill remaining items. Educated guessing beats empty. See smart guessing.
Practice the passes on short sets first. A 20-item timed drill is enough to feel the skip muscle.
Do not bank on “I’ll fly through GI”
GI can be fast *if* you already retrieve the fact. If you do not, it becomes a slow reread. Do not schedule GI as leftover time. Put a little GI retrieval in daily minutes so the paper’s GI block is recognition, not research.
Watch the real thief: rereading the same stem
Time-of-death is often the third reread. Rule: after two reads, either compute or flag. On Numerical, copy the numbers onto scratch paper on read two so you are not eye-tracking the paragraph forever.
Mock timer vs exam timer
Here, the timer can autosubmit. That trains urgency. The real exam has proctors and a different physical setup. Transfer the *habit* (passes, flags), not the superstition that our countdown equals CSC’s. Room rules, breaks, and materials: exam day guide, then official PDF.
A drill you can run tonight
Set 15 minutes. 12 mixed items. Forced skip at 60 seconds. Count how many you still blanked at the end. Tomorrow, the drill is the same count or better, not “finish a textbook.”
Worked example: 40 mixed items, 35 minutes
You start. Items 1–8 are harvest. Item 9 is a long analogy; at 50 seconds you flag. Items 10–18 harvest. Item 19 is a word problem; you copy numbers, finish. Item 22 is paragraph organization; you flag immediately because it is a known leak. With 8 minutes left you have six flags and two blanks. Pass 2 clears three flags. Pass 3 fills the rest. You did not “finish feeling complete.” You finished with a process. That process is what transfers. Completeness is a mood.
If instead you married item 9 for six minutes, you never saw item 30, which was a GI fact you knew. That is not a knowledge problem. It is a time-management problem wearing a Verbal mask.
Clocks you can practice vs clocks you cannot fake
You can practice a 15-minute / 12-item clock tonight. You cannot practice the exact proctor cadence until you are in the room. Do not obsess over matching official minutes per item as if CSC published your personal split. Obsess over skip muscle and unanswered count.
What if I finish too early? Use leftover time on flags, not on rewriting GI you already bubbled unless you have a specific reason. Early finish plus 8 unanswered is not early. It is a harvest bug.
What if I never finish mocks? Shorten the set until you finish with a pass-3, then lengthen. Finishing is a skill.

The neighbor’s cough is not in your home mock — train anyway
You cannot simulate every room. You can simulate a clock and a skip rule. If you wait to practice time until the room is perfect, you will meet both stressors at once. Home mocks are incomplete and still necessary.
Put one mixed timed set on a week you are already tired. That is closer to the paper than a fresh Saturday morning only.
