People want a mock to be a crystal ball. It is a gym. Gym numbers matter. They are still not the sport’s official score. If you treat a 68% mock as “I will fail” or an 88% as “I will pass,” you are using the wrong instrument.

What a good mock *is* for
- Stamina: sitting still with a mixed paper.
- Process: flags, skips, last-minute blanks.
- Leak finding: which topics still crash when you are tired.
- Timer honesty: especially when the clock is server-side, not a paused YouTube video.

What a mock is *not*
- Not CSC’s general rating. Passing is 80.00 on CSC’s formula. Details and citations: passing score guide and this blog’s score explainer.
- Not an official per-subtest blueprint. We use editorial estimates. Do not memorize them as Commission law.
- Not the room, the IDs, the heat, the neighbor’s cough. Those are exam day plus official PDFs.
- Not a leaked paper. If a mock vendor says otherwise, leave.
How to read the result without spiraling
Look at:
- Unanswered count (process).
- Weakest two topics (syllabus).
- Time of death (which section you were in when you started rushing).
Do not look at the single number as identity. A week of drills on the two topics will change the next mock more than rereading the result page.
How many mocks
For most working adults: one diagnostic at the start, one full or half mock mid-plan, one closer to your personal exam date *after* you know the date from CSC. Three full mocks in 72 hours is noise plus fatigue. Quality of review between mocks beats mock count.
Transfer checklist
After a mock, write three process notes (“flagged too late,” “GI leftover,” “decimal”). Those notes become the next week’s drills. If you only feel feelings, the mock was expensive entertainment.
A conversation you can steal when someone asks your mock percent
“It told me paragraph organization and number sequences are leaks. I’m drilling those 25 minutes a night. The percent is a gym number, not CSC’s 80.00.” If they insist it predicts the GR, you can stop talking. You do not owe a prophecy.
If your mock is high and you skipped sleep, do not book a celebration. If it is low and you unanswered 15 items, fix process before you burn the syllabus.
After a brutal mock, the next 24 hours
Do not sit another full mock tonight. Sleep. Tomorrow, drill only the two leak topics for 25 minutes each. The mock already charged you stamina. Paying twice does not buy extra truth. If you feel you “wasted” the mock because the percent is low, you got the leak map you paid in time for. Use it.
Should I compare percents with a friend? Only if you used the same instrument and you both speak process. Comparing a 40-item diagnostic to their 170-item sitting is theater.

What to copy from a mock into the real room
Copy: harvest, flags, last-minute fill, scratch recipes. Do not copy: our editorial subtest mix as CSC law, our percent as GR, our EDQ-skip behavior as official EDQ policy. EDQ in the real exam is CSC’s questionnaire. Here, similar items are labeled unscored practice. Keep those categories separate in your head or you will tell relatives a confused story.

Do this tonight (mock literacy)
Read your last mock (or sit a short diagnostic) and write only process: unanswered, flags unused, time of death. Hide the percent with your hand. If you cannot describe process without the percent, the percent is running you. Mock tips.
What a mock is allowed to train, and what it must not pretend to be
Allowed: mixed timed items, harvest and flags, stamina, a leak map, the habit of filling blanks. Not allowed: speaking as CSC, freezing an editorial mix as law, converting percent to 80.00 GR, or treating our unscored personal-data practice as the official EDQ. Keep those sentences separate when you talk to relatives or you will spend a week arguing theology instead of drilling paragraph organization.
If a mock feels “easier” or “harder” than a cousin’s memory of 2018, that is not a calibration certificate. Papers change. Memory is a story. Use the instrument in front of you for process. Use official PDFs for the room. Then drill leaks. Passing vs mock percent exists because this confusion is expensive.
Honest limits
We cannot promise that matching our timer will match CSC’s proctoring. We can promise that practicing mixed timed items is closer to the task than highlighting alone.
