Anxiety before a high-stakes government exam is not a character defect. It is a body doing its job with too little information. The unhelpful response is to treat anxiety as a topic you can highlight away, or to buy a “sure pass” PDF because fear wants a product.
This is not medical advice. If anxiety is wrecking work or sleep for weeks, talk to a licensed professional. This is exam-process advice from an independent reviewer.
Name the job of the feeling
Fear says: this matters, do not be sloppy. You can thank it and still sit the item. What you cannot do is wait to feel brave. Bravery is optional. A first pass on easy items is not.
If your hands shake, write slower on scratch paper. Slow writing is still writing. Panic rereading is not.
Shrink the unknown with one diagnostic
Unknowns multiply: What’s on it? Am I stupid? When is it? You can close the first two with a timed diagnostic and a sticky of three leaks. The date stays CSC’s job — schedule guide, no guessing.
Anxiety loves a vague syllabus. A three-topic syllabus is smaller than “the entire civil service.”
Install a ritual that is shorter than a spiral
Pick a 60-second start: water, two breaths, write “pass 1 = harvest” on scratch paper. Use it on every timed set so test proper is not the first time the ritual exists.
Do not invent a 20-minute visualization that you will skip when late.
Anxiety during an item
If the stem swims: skip. Flagging is an anxiety tool, not only a time tool. See flag/skip/return. Returning later with a cooler pulse is allowed.
If you blank on GI you used to know, that is retrieval under stress. Train retrieval in daily minutes, not only recognition while notes are open.
Sleep is not a reward for finishing the reviewer
It is part of the reviewer. A short session plus sleep beats a 2 a.m. Numerical binge that proves you are dedicated and then tanks tomorrow’s workday — which tanks the next session. See daily minutes.
What to do with a racing heart on item 12
Feet on the floor. Exhale longer than inhale once. Read the operator word. If it is still swimming, flag. You are not required to feel serene to harvest the next GI fact you know cold. Serenity is a nice extra. Harvest is the job. If panic is daily and not just exam-shaped, that is bigger than a blog — get human help.
A mock at home with a kitchen timer is exposure practice. Avoiding all timers until “the big day” is how the first clock feels like an attack.
Anxiety scripts you can retire
“If I were smart I would not feel this.” Smart people feel this. The paper is high stakes for a government list.
“I need to feel ready to start a timer.” Readiness is partly the timer. Start a 10-item set.
“Everyone else is calm.” You are not seeing their bathroom. Mute the chat.
If panic includes chest pain, fainting, or weeks of no sleep, this article is not your ceiling — get medical or mental-health care. Exam hacks are for exam-shaped fear, not for treating a disorder with flashcards.
Rehearse the 60-second ritual on the diagnostic so the first clock is not test proper.
Build a pre-set ritual you can do in a hallway
Water. Two breaths. Write “harvest first.” Start. That is the whole liturgy. If you add crystals, playlists, and a 15-minute stretch, you will skip the ritual when late and then call yourself broken. Late is when the short ritual earns its keep.
Practice it on cheap timers: kitchen, phone, this site’s diagnostic. The first time you use it should not be under a proctor’s clock. Pair with night before so packing and ritual are different jobs.
Do this tonight (anxiety)
Sit a 10-item timed set you do not care about. Use the 60-second ritual. The point is not the score. The point is proving to your body that a clock can exist without catastrophe. Log one sentence: “I started.” That sentence is the win. If you cannot start, shrink to five items. Avoidance is the spiral. Diagnostic is allowed to be the set.
Shrink the first clock until “I started” is true
Five items count. Avoidance is the spiral. The diagnostic is allowed to be that set. Process gives fear fewer blank pages.
Honest limits
We will not claim this article removes anxiety. We will not claim passing is guaranteed if you breathe. We will claim that process (timer, flags, small syllabus) gives fear fewer blank pages to write horror on.
Next: night before the exam and working-student review.

Social anxiety (group chats)
Mutes are allowed. Other people’s 12-hour days are not data about you. Mute leak rumors. They raise cortisol and teach nothing legal.
